The Hatfield McCoy Weekend

Karen Murray Anderson (MM8075, DA576, HF5492)Glen absolutely loves the Hatfield McCoy marathon! The friendliness of the people and the rich history of the course have captured his heart. He even dreamt of getting married at the halfway point in Metewan, an old coal mining town that still looks like the 1800s. The Airbnb we stayed in this year, right in Williamson was also from the 1800s, adding to the charm of the experience.
While the concept of getting married at the halfway point and finishing as husband and wife sounded fun, I couldn’t imagine asking my NY friends and family to travel to such a remote location. The race offers a unique glimpse into different ways of life, and it was Glen’s 6th time running it and my 3rd. It was great to spend time with Heather and Brandon! Hope they aren’t too sore we beat them at pool 2x. 😜. Congrats to Heather for having a great time with a stop in Dairy Queen to boot and to Brandon for a great 5k race!
The Hatfield-McCoy feud is a legendary tale of clashing families in the wild West Virginia hills. Fueled by old grudges and fierce pride, these rival clans engaged in a bloody feud that lasted for decades. Their story is one of betrayal, violence, and revenge, making it a thrilling chapter in American history.
The race has 2 different half options, starting in Kentucky and finishing in WV, allowing runners to check off a state of their choice. You scan start at the start of the marathon or in the middle to the finish. The weather was cooler than usual this year at the start, making for a more comfortable first half of the run. Despite walking most of the first 18 miles, I started to run/walk on the dirt roads and felt pretty good. I’m making a comeback! Thanks to Brian for great company for 18 miles.
Looking forward to adding more run/walk next week in Charlevoix, Michigan and continuing to push myself. Onward and upward! 🏃‍♀️👟🌟
