Tales From Medal Monday Volume 3 Chapter 7

Medal Monday brings many stories of achievement for our members. Here are recent stories from the Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics, as told by you, as posted on the Marathon Maniacs/Half Fanatics Facebook pages.

Congratulations to all of our members who ran these last few weekends!

Linda Snell – (HF18475, DA3757, MM16006)

#medalmonday Gettysburg half complete! Such a beautiful, scenic course! Yes, it is hilly, and little crowd support due to the rual setting, but aid stations were great! Well organized and overall a fantastic time! Even met a couple MM there.

Sadly 15 minutes after this pic was taken, while walking back to my car, something popped in my knee and now I’m on crutches (awaiting MRI later this week).
This race was such an awesome experience I highly recommend it (except for the knee popping part, please don’t do that!)

Lara Drew Aktary (HF18655)

#medalmonday Tacoma weather was perfect for running (until getting drenched at the finishline festival) and the course was beautiful, albeit hilly, with great support.

I wore my Half Fanatics shirt in hopes of meeting some of you but sadly not a single connection. (I also thought there would be a tent. Bummer.)
This is my 12th state and maybe my 20th half marathon(?) Def one of my favorites so far!

Brenda Folkerts (MM15695, DA3674, HF18068) – Zion 50K: Sunday
I didn’t take a ton of photos this year because I was trying to beat my course time from 2 yrs ago. Keith took some photos where he saw me out on the course, and I took a few at the viewpoint. These ones are from Mile 5 to Mile 18.

Cade Remsburg (MM4393) – About a month ago Destination Marathons had a spot open for London. I wasn’t running well but figured it was a month away and I could still run a nd have a good time, right? Then came a true grind at Salisbury a couple weeks later and a dreadful second half at Boston 6 days ago that I really have no answers for. I walked into today unsure of my footing and honestly scared how bad it would go. I knew the first miles would be fine and was thrilled when they continued to 13. It really was thrilling to run this course and I wish more of us could! The crowd just carried me away and I was able to drop a 3:15 finish and rekindle my love for running! Thank you everyone for your support and listening to me whine the past couple weeks. You truly helped bring out my A game today. Also thrilled to catch up with an old friend Kristi and visit this incredible city!

Jolanta Thorburn (HF18464, DA3742, MM15959) – Took my medal on a quick photo shoot this evening as I fly on a very early flight to Warsaw 🇵🇱 tomorrow. Thank you London! This was a dream come true!
5th Major in the books ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I PR’ed!!! 💃Still waiting for the official results, but I believe I shaved 4 minutes from my last PR in Chicago 2022!
As always, I’m beyond grateful for the love and support of my husband who is always there for me cheering on the side lines! It means the world to me!
I love you babe! 💕

Amy Hall (HF16519) – Oh what a day!!! I PRD AT THE TCS London Marathon!! 3:46:59 – I was hoping to finish a little faster but the course was crowded which made keeping my pace difficult. I could not have done this without the support of my family who support my crazy habit, my friends who join me on some grueling training runs with smiles and encouragement, my amazing coaches who kept me focused and on track, and Shea Rogers at Baton Rouge Physical Therapy-Lake and Brenner at Trifecta Sports Therapy who keep me and my “wittle wegs” healthy and happy. It truly takes a village.
I’m still pinching myself. To think I went from not being able to walk without pain a year ago to running a marathon at an 8:34 average pace…WOW!!!
Overall I felt great until the last mile…according to my friends that is how a PR is supposed to feel 😂🤣😂
And a special shout out to all the people who were on my pray list…I’m truly honored you let me “bring” you with me on this journey. Words cannot express how much all of you helped me during this amazing race.
I cannot say enough about Destination Marathons. This company anticipated all our needs and even gave us a warm spot to sit while we waited to get into our corrals. I cannot wait to travel with them again 💕

Randell Hansen(MM8508, DA2931, HF16161)– Not an event for the 50 States stats but I finished the London Marathon this weekend in 3:11:00! Well organized event and nice to run past some notable landmarks. Final ⭐️ will be Tokyo!

Karen Johnson Derrick (MM12498, DA3640, HF18426) – Finished the London Marathon today and completed all the world major marathons!
NewYork, Berlin. Boston, Chicago, Tokyo and finally London!
This was my 177th marathon!
I’m a bit tired this evening so I only have a few pictures to share.

Karen Gordon(MM12170, DA2028, HF13486) -Got marathon #71 done 13 days after Boston. My second Boston2Eugene challenge is in the books, my first was in 2013 when I ran with my son, Cory. We had hoped to do Eugene together today too, but Cory has a trial tomorrow that pulled him out of town. Fun to finish in the remodeled Hayward Field (although the original Hayward Field was better, in my opinion). The medals were made with reclaimed wood from the original historic Hayward Field. I dedicated this marathon to my running friend Patty who recently contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome. She can’t breathe on her own (has a trach), can’t talk, can’t move her arms, and is in a long term acute rehab hospital. I pray she will recover fully and be able to run again. 🙏🙏 I had many meaningful connections with runners who liked the verse on my shirt “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. I gave Hyland’s Leg Cramps and ArniSport tabs out to many runners. One grateful runner came up to me afterward and said the leg cramps tabs saved his race and gave him immediate relief. I fell at mile 13.5, but not as hard as some of my falls lately. Picking myself up and finishing as strong as possible is becoming a regular thing. Fun to meet up with other Marathon Maniacs. ♥️💛 Boston2Eugene 💙💛2💚💛

Steve Walters(MM338, DA9, HF21) – Made it 12 loops/12 hours at the Banana Slug Backyard Ultra. More trails than I’m ready for, but no falls. 👍🏼 A little more than half way, my career running miles hit 3 times around the world (74,700 miles). (🏃🏻‍♂️‍➡️ x 🌎🌎🌎) A good day overall. Marathon/ultra #523.

Steffen Schneider (MM4148) – Calico Racings-Purple Run- musical tribute to Prince 1/2 Marathon. Saturday April 13th. RD, Joyce knocked it out of the Park again. What’s better than catching up on some overdue training miles on a perfect day, 7 minute drive from my house. Another great Calico Event at Sunset Park. Great to catch up with my longtime Fellow German Friend, Ivy Rhinehardt. (Not shown) She’s my official stretching and Massage guru.

Jan H. Steenkamp(MM9420, DA787, HF7811) – and Tania Diener (MM9421, DA788, HF7813) -Zurich Rock and Roll Madrid Marathon in Spain.

Robyn Larkin (MM12339, DA2768, HF15809) – Bergen City Marathon in Norway! It was beautiful!

Charlotte Corriher (MM3514) – Troublesome Hollow 50k in Bristol VA

Claire Gladstone (MM12421) – 50k -marathon or more #127 Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug Ultras New Preston CT oldest 100k in the USA, 50th running this weekend !! Great day with ultra legends, maniacs and more!

Michael Worrell(MM15140, DA3639, HF184525) – North-South Marathon at Gettysburg Festival of Races – Gettysburg, PA

Eddie Hahn(MM184) – Santiago de Chile today. (Sunday). Fell 16 seconds short of my goal thanks to calf cramps at 37km. 4:00:15

Steve Walters(MM338, DA9, HF21) – I completed my 799th and 800th races half marathon or longer. Gresham Lilac Half Marathon in 1:51 (276th half marathon) and the Eugene Marathon in 3:46 (524th marathon/ultra). A fun weekend of racing!

Steve Felson(MM5145) – Eugene Marathon

Billie Melanson(MM15841) – Ran my 6th Boston Marathon on April 15, then took a flight across the Atlantic and ran London Marathon on April 21. That’s the Tower Bridge we ran over at about mile 13. London was my 28th marathon & 4th World Major .

Glenn Richardson(MM14162, DA3076, HF16007) – KDF Marathon and Backside Trail Marathon

Christy Halvorson Shelton (MM12193, DA2045, HF13210) – I’m a little late, but since you have the London medal on your page, here’s mine. (Also ran Tacoma City Half on 4/28 but no photos.)

Paul Vining (MM15580, DA3647, HF18444) – Paced the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon, had a blast.

Lisa Vezzetti (MM4467) – Almira Marathon Trail Race in Arkansas for my 36th state. Small race but AMAZING aid stations and non-stop mud. 🤪 #medalmonday

Michelle Perez (MM15784) – Medal Monday. Ran Mountains 2 Beach Marathon this weekend, beautiful course!
