Conquering Iowa’s Hillbilly Hike

Scott Pearson(HF18577) – It May not have been my best idea a week after last cowboy backyard ultra, but Half 70 is in the books with the hillbilly hike this morning in Iowa. Not a new state but a well done local race. A chilly 40 at the start, but the rain held off until after the race. Side note it included a bit of sleet in the downpour as I drove to my hotel. The race left the buses to let us sit in until start. It was a beautiful course through fall foliage on a paved trail. At the start I had to convince my legs that yes we are doing this today. Went well until mile 10 when they said really. I told them shut up we are almost done. During a tough year one of my best times at 240. The volunteers were troopers in this weather. You do know you are in a hunting state when the volunteers cold gear is mostly in blaze orange. Post race they served biscuits and gravy as well as pie. I was not impressed with this year’s medal being wood, but past years medals have been very nice. I assume it is to cut costs, but I have had several races go with the wood medals this year. Might be just me but they do not impress me
