50K Success at the Westfield Ultra

Alexis Davidson(MM926)- Walked the MissionCleanWater Westfield Ultra yesterday. It has 3/6/9/12 and 24 HR options. I went with the 9HR b/c I wanted a 50K. 69-80F with light winds and dewpoints in the 50s. Really good weather for summer in the northeast. The loop was .8M and was pretty flat. The surface was hardpack with rocks, or one could choose to use the asphalt next to it with a little bit of a distance penalty. I chose half and half. Strava says 233ft elevation over 39 loops. This was my first ultra of the year, and my strategy was a sub 5:40 for the marathon, followed by whenever for the 50K. I was able to keep it under 10min/loop until around 19M. Went through the marathon at an interpolated 5:34:22 and then slowed down and had one long stop at the aid station where I caught up with my hydration. By then, my feet were tired and painful from all the rocks. Then did the last 6 loops around 12+min each. Interpolated time for the 50K was 6:49:36 and 6:51:32 for the 31.2M. It was a good training walk for my date this week with Wally Watermelon. I was surprised to see Richie Innamorato of the Broadway Ultra Society doing 20M in the 6HR. #marathonmaniacs.
