Mary and Jamie “Hot Rod” Miller Complete 50 States Together

Mary Miller (MM14657) and her daughter Jamie “Hot Rod” Miller (MM14478) both from Indiana, celebrated an extraordinary achievement by finishing their 50 states at the Marshall Marathon in Huntington, West Virginia, on November 3, 2024.

A Unique Beginning

Mary’s journey began in an unexpected way. An orthopedic nurse in Chicago, she suffered a tibia plateau fracture when a patient fell on her. After surgery, her doctor challenged her to go to the gym. Starting with the treadmill, she quickly moved on to 5K races and encouraged Jamie to join her. At the time, Jamie was a smoker and hadn’t run since junior high, but they both discovered a shared passion for running.

Inspired by their involvement in local running groups and volunteering at races like the Chicago Marathon, they decided to run a marathon themselves. Submitting $200 each for the lottery, both were selected and began training with Hal Higdon’s plan. Despite challenges—including Mary’s sacrum fracture—they completed their first marathon together in 4:59:29, narrowly achieving their sub-5-hour goal.

Building Momentum

The pair continued to race, with highlights including the Cleveland Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Chicago Marathon. Jamie’s brother eventually joined them, and Mary committed to completing all 50 states.

Overcoming Challenges

In 2018, Jamie faced a life-altering diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. Initially fearful she would have to give up running, she instead learned to manage her condition and went on to achieve her marathon PR of 4:43:41. Despite the pandemic slowing racing opportunities in 2020, they adapted and completed several marathons under extreme precautions.

Memories and Milestones

Over the years, Mary and Jamie built cherished memories. From floating down rivers in Missoula to running alongside wild mustangs in Las Vegas, their adventures were as much about exploration as running. Along the way, they encountered a moose, elk, bear, beluga whales, and more. They also reconnected with family across the country and made lifelong friends through their Stinky Tuesdays Run Group and the Calumet Region Striders.

In addition to running, they celebrated with local brews and scenic hikes, like a seven-mile, 10-waterfall trek in Oregon.

Gratitude and Reflection

Throughout their journey, the support of their local running community and family was integral. “We couldn’t have done this without our Calumet Strider family and our Stinky Tuesdays Run Group, who guided and supported us the entire way,” Jamie shared.

From overcoming injuries and personal challenges to celebrating victories and unforgettable experiences, Mary and Jamie’s story is a testament to perseverance, family bonds, and the power of the running community.

Congratulations, Mary and Jamie, on this incredible milestone!
