Too Cold to Hold Half Marathon

Tiffany Kehoe (HF18768)-Too Cold to Hold Half Marathon – Dallas, Texas
This race was an experience for me from start to finish. Hold on folks, this review is an emotional rollercoaster.
I chose this race since it was relatively unknown and I like giving smaller races a chance.
The instructions leading up to the race were very easy to follow. The race was communicative with runners. Packet pick up was day of with no extra charge There was also the pre pickup options, easy peasy. Bag check was good.
The course was around a lake and pretty. It’s a bit of rolling hills and some small bridges that sway. It was all paved but had a bit of a trail feel. There were no huge bells or whistles but the hydration stations were well stocked with gels, Gatorade and water. Personally, I think they could have used a few more (there was one around the 2 mile markers). I found the course manageable.
What made this race great was the volunteers and pacers. Around mile 5, I started to feel awful, by mile 10, I knew I was in a very bad way, and started.to seriously fall behind. The course does have a 3:45 time limit and they hold firm to that. While I had managed to make the halfway point on time, I fell behind the sweepers and knew I was in trouble. With some help from the Dallas Fire and Rescue, I was able to make a bit of a recovery, ( coconut water for the win) and finish the race. The pacers from this race, met us around mile 12 and they walked me in where I was met with a small group of congratulations by other pacers who stayed behind to wait for us. I cried. If it hadn’t been for their kindness, I would have definitely DNFed. They were all so supportive and kind and reassured me that my race would count and I would not be DNFing on their watch. They were the cheering voice when mine was absolutely defeated.
I didn’t get to experience the after party, but I did hear it was enjoyable. The pre race festivities were nice and there were several vendors giving out free things to drink. The medal and swag were nice. I wouldn’t say they were over the top or special, but they were nicely made.
Overall, the race itself was nothing special however, the volunteers and the pacers were absolutely memorable and made a difference that day by being there. Dallas and this race will forever hold a place in my heart. It was extremely back of the pack friendly (if you can hang with the 330/345 time limit) and I would suggest it to support a good cause and fantastic people who make a difference.
If anyone from that race sees this, thank you
